Benefits of Cooperative Learning








Cooperative learning is a process in which the teacher breaks a classroom of students into small groups so they can learn and discover a new concept together. Cooperative learning has been around for decades and nowadays teachers are using it more and more day by day. The good thing about this is that students are divided in small groups and every one of them has to do a different task, so they are more responsible for their role in the group.

After giving you a short paragraph about what cooperative learning is, I want today to give you some of the benefits of cooperative learning. Below I will list some of them:

1.       1. Raise achievement of students.

2.       2. Build positive relationships among students - important for creating a learning community that values diversity.

3.      3.  Provide experiences that develop both good learning skills and social skills.

4.       4. Higher achievement.

5.       5. Increased retention.

6.       6. More positive relationships and a wider circle of friends.

7.       7. Greater intrinsic motivation.

8.       8. Higher self-esteem.

9.       9. Greater social support.

10.   10. More on-task behavior.

11.   11. Better attitudes toward teachers.

12.   12. Better attitudes toward school.

 



Now that you know the importance and the benefits of cooperative learning I think we as English teachers should use it more in our classroom. Maybe it will be a bit difficult in the beginning but the more you practice it in your classroom, the better you and your students will become. Then you will see the benefits of group works.
